Description:
The Wheel of Sharp Weapons is perhaps the earliest and most celebrated text in the genre of mind-training (Lojong). Written by the great Indian yogi Dharmarakshita, one of Atisha’s main teachers, it focuses on the giving and taking (tonglen) method for overcoming the self-cherishing attitude and grasping for an impossible “true me.”

Tonglen is an advanced Mahayana method whereby we imagine taking on the sufferings of others and giving them happiness. Mahayana training in perfect altruism is seen as the means to achieve lasting happiness and peace for oneself and others, and Dharmarakshita’s Wheel as the supreme means to cut through our true enemies – self-grasping and self-cherishing.

“Effectively striking the heart of the foe,” the Wheel of Sharp Weapons provides essential tools for transforming suffering into happiness. This weeklong retreat will consist of teachings and meditation.

Recommended Text: Wheel of Sharp Weapons.

Retreat Schedule: Friday – Prayers and Aspirations 5-6 PM, and dinner
Saturday & Sunday- Registration starting at 8:30 AM, retreat starts at 10 AM

Description:

This retreat will focus on two methods for cultivating meditative quiescence, or shamatha. Initially we will practice the “mindfulness of breathing,” which is an effective approach to soothing the body and calming the discursive mind. The second method of our focus is both a shamatha practice and a preliminary to Dzogchen, called “settling the mind in its natural state.” The attainment of shamatha is widely regarded in the Buddhist tradition as an indispensable foundation for the cultivation of contemplative insight (vipashyana), and this retreat is designed to provide participants with a sufficient theoretical understanding and a basis in experience to enable them to proceed effectively toward this extraordinary state of mental and physical balance.

Additional instruction will be offered on the cultivation of the four immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. These qualities of the heart are so powerful that they can break down all the barriers that are created by attachment and aversion, opening our hearts boundlessly to all beings, which brings peace and happiness. Lectures and guided meditations will be interspersed with periods for group discussions and focus on the practical application of these practices in daily life. Participants are welcome to practice meditation in both the sitting (cross-legged or on a chair) position or in the supine position.

Saturday & Sunday- Registration starting at 8:30 AM, retreat starts at 10 AM

Description:
A mysterious Kashmiri woman from the 10-11 centuries is known as Niguma, the Dakini of Timeless Awareness, and is said to be the main source of the Tibetan lineage called Shangpa Kagyu. Not only is she herself ethereal, as befits a dakini, but most of the works attributed to her seem to focus on illusion.

Her practices of the Six Dharmas emphasize illusory body and dream yoga, and her only lengthy treatise is called “Stages in the Path of Illusion.” We’ll explore the woman and her teachings, based on the recent publication of Niguma, Lady of Illusion by Snow Lion Publications.

How might we journey on this path as illusion?

Buddha Nature with Ven. Tenzin Priyadarshi

Retreat Dates: May 7 – May 8, 2011

Retreat Location: Webcast from CA to TSL, MIT and Grand Junction CO.

Retreat Schedule: Sat. May 7 – Registration starts at 9 AM, teaching at 10:30.
Sun. May 8 – Meditation

Description:
Buddha Nature refers to the realization that all beings, without exception, have the same nature and potential for enlightenment. Just as clouds temporarily cover the sun, so too can ignorance temporarily obscure our Buddha Nature and hinder our development of compassion and wisdom. Meditation practice can allow us to see the true nature of things and develop these naturally present seeds of enlightenment.

This retreat will be conducted online from California.
